Betsy Bluebird loved to soar high
And build big play nest
As high as the blue sky.
She'd spy from the clouds
For the best little twig
To place on her nests
Until they got really big.
Along with this fun
She needed to eat.
That's where Momma helped
She cooked over the stove and heat.
Betsy Bluebird - sweet and adored
Was starting to fly off
After dinner
Forgetting her chore.
All she had to do was
Wash dishes at the sink.
Momma would dry and stack
Washing was easy
Wouldn't you think?
Momma Bluebird
Surprised by Betsy's flight
Followed her one day
Sure to be well out of sight.
Soon Momma came upon
Her daughter's love and labor.
IT WAS A NEST CITY
High above the next door neighbor.
The nests were like towers
Perched carefully on tree branches.
They tickled the sky.
And fall?
What were the chances?
She saw how careful Betsy built her nests
One twig at a time
Stacked neatly
She had to be the best.
Momma could have gotten mad
Shouted, brought Betsy back with her.
Instead she flew home
Quietly, like a whisper.
Momma still had the challenge
How to get Betsy to wash at least one dish.
Then an idea popped up
"I think I'll do a switch!"
Knowing her talent of stacking twigs into huge nests
Momma would wash the dishes
And Betsy would do the rest.
That eve' Momma spoke with Betsy
She said, "Your chores are to come first!"
Betsy Bluebird felt sad
Her tears were ready to burst.
"Next door in our neighbor's tress
I saw your nest, how pretty! Why don't you stack dishes?
I'll wash
You build a dish city!"
"Yes! I'll do it!" she chirped
Betsy was filled with hope
Here chore would be fun
Momma was glad she didn't say 'nope'
The next day after supper
The kitchen switch had begun.
Momma washed dishes
Betsy had some fun.
She fluttered to dry
Stacked dishes up high
She did it so quickly, she said,
"I'm finished! Can I say bye bye?"
It should have been not surprise
For it gave Momma a smile,
Cups, saucers, spoons and dishes
Were put neatly in one pile.
So Betsy flew off to her nests
After Momma's okay.
She looked at her stacked dishes,
And sang,
"A chore can be made into play!"
