Most poems with bluebirds as the characters are meant for children. Typically, the intention of the writer is to embed a 'life's lesson' within the story. While writing this poem I realized that the lesson is more for the adult than it is for the child.

There is a lesson in this poem for us 'big birds'. We can choose to react to our circumstances as a creative opportunity or an ill-fated problem fraught with fear. Mama bird chose to hold her beak when she discovered Betsy's exuberance for nest building. She went into creative mode that encouraged and nurtured Betsy's self-expression and yet held her accountable for the daily chores. She took the 'problem' out of problem solving and solved the situation using Betsy's talent. It certainly made a "chore into play" for the prolific nest builder.

This article is not intended to cover all the aspects of conflict resolution. And when a challenging situation does arise we can STOP, LOOK at the situation and challenge yourself to CHOOSE a healthy response that will incorporate the person's self-expression while holding them responsible for their actions. It will allow a soul, young or old, to soar to new possibilities by utilizing their talent and imagination vice fear in dealing with life's turbulent moments. And how do I know? A little birdie told me.
